Bellingham is a college town, a fishing town, a former mining town, a city with the nation's second-highest per-capita rate of coffee joints, an arts community, a mountain-biking and kayaking mecca, the City of Subdued Excitement.
This city of 76,130 residents in the northwest corner of Washington is made up of 24 distinct neighborhoods, each with their own personalities, points of pride and challenges. Bellingham Neighborhood News 2010 is a collection of hyper-local news blogs about these neighborhoods. Two classes are blogging about neighborhoods. You can read the work from the other class here.
The blogs on the left are written by Western Washington University students in Assistant Professor Carolyn Nielsen's Journalism 307 reporting classes. Each of the 18 students in each class is assigned to cover one neighborhood for a quarter, getting to know the people who live there and exploring the issues that matter to them.
